using maps

When I am using google maps for specific directions, I can no longer zoom in over specific places along the route. I can't find an option to recenter the map (move N, S, W , or E) before zooming. It simply zooms until I can no longer view the directions at all. I have recently upgraded to yosemite. How I can pick and choose where I zoom, while using into directions on maps?
